Rubber Sole vs Suede Sole Slippers

Which Woolfi slipper is right for you?

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"Should I choose a rubber sole or a suede sole?"

The answer depends on how and where you'll wear your slippers.

Both options are crafted from the same premium natural New Zealand wool upper, so you'll enjoy the same warmth, breathability and comfort. The difference lies in how each sole performs in your home and everyday routine.

This guide will help you choose the best option for your lifestyle.

Rubber Sole Slippers

Best for:

  • Timber floors
  • Polished concrete
  • Tiles
  • Vinyl flooring
  • Open-plan homes
  • Light outdoor use

If your home has predominantly hard flooring, our natural rubber sole is the best choice.

The rubber provides additional grip and durability, making it ideal for moving confidently between different floor surfaces. It's also suitable for stepping outside briefly — whether that's collecting the mail, watering the garden, or enjoying your morning coffee on the deck.

Many customers also choose the rubber sole if they like the convenience of wearing the same slippers both inside and for quick trips outdoors.

Benefits

  • Excellent grip on hard floors
  • Suitable for timber, tile and concrete
  • Durable for everyday wear
  • Ideal for indoor and light outdoor use
  • Flexible and comfortable underfoot

Important Information

Our rubber sole is made from natural rubber, rather than synthetic rubber compounds.

Because it is a natural material, it may react with certain chemicals found in some modern stain-resistant carpets. These surface treatments can, over time, contribute to premature deterioration or stickiness in natural rubber products.

If your home has predominantly synthetic carpet with stain-resistant treatments, we recommend considering our suede sole instead.

Suede Sole Slippers

Best for:

  • Carpeted homes
  • Bedrooms
  • Upstairs or apartment style living
  • Traditional indoor use

Our suede sole is the original Woolfi experience.

Soft, lightweight and beautifully quiet underfoot, suede provides a natural feel that many customers love for indoor living.

It performs particularly well on carpet, where it offers a gentle, comfortable walking experience.

Benefits

  • Soft and flexible
  • Quiet underfoot
  • Lightweight feel
  • Perfect for carpeted homes
  • Traditional indoor slipper

Important Information

Suede is a natural leather and is designed primarily for indoor use.

On smooth surfaces such as polished timber, tiles or concrete, suede can become slippery, particularly if the sole becomes damp or worn.

For homes with mostly hard flooring, we generally recommend choosing our rubber sole.

Which Sole Should I Choose?

Choose Rubber Sole if you:

✔ Have timber, tile or concrete floors

✔ Like stepping outside occasionally

✔ Want extra grip around the home

✔ Prefer one slipper for both indoor and light outdoor use

Choose Suede Sole if you:

✔ Have mostly carpet throughout your home

✔ Prefer a traditional slipper

✔ Want a soft, lightweight feel

✔ Wear your slippers indoors only

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear the rubber sole outside?

Yes. The rubber sole is designed for indoor living with the versatility for light outdoor use, such as walking to the letterbox, watering the garden or enjoying time on the deck.

It isn't intended as a replacement for everyday outdoor footwear.

Is the suede sole waterproof?

No. Suede is a natural leather and performs best in dry indoor environments. We recommend using a suede protector before first wear; see here on how to care for your Woolfi Slippers.

Why does Woolfi use natural rubber?

Natural rubber offers excellent flexibility, comfort and grip while complementing the natural materials used throughout our slippers.

Unlike many synthetic rubber compounds, natural rubber is derived from renewable resources.

Can natural rubber react with carpet?

Some synthetic carpets are treated with stain-resistant or chemical coatings.

Over time, these treatments may contribute to the deterioration of natural rubber. While this won't occur in every home, customers with predominantly treated synthetic carpet may find our suede sole a better option.

Which sole lasts longer?

Both soles are designed for years of comfortable wear when used as intended.

Choosing the right sole for your home is the best way to maximise the life of your slippers.

Our Recommendation

There isn't a "better" sole — only the one that's better for your home.

If your home has hard floors and you like the flexibility of stepping outside, choose Rubber Sole.

If your home is mostly carpeted and your slippers stay indoors, choose Suede Sole.

Whichever you choose, you'll enjoy the same natural New Zealand wool comfort that makes Woolfi slippers a favourite in homes throughout New Zealand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Woolfi slippers stretch?

Yes — Woolfi slippers naturally soften and mould to your feet over time while maintaining their structure through the felting process.

How should Woolfi slippers fit?

Your Woolfis should feel comfortably snug initially. The wool will soften and adapt with wear, creating a personalised fit.

Can I exchange my slippers if the fit isn’t right?

Absolutely. We offer exchanges within our return period provided items are unworn and in original condition.

Are Woolfi slippers made from real wool?

Yes. Woolfi slippers are made using sustainably sourced New Zealand wool.

Where are Woolfi slippers made?

Our slippers are handmade by skilled artisan partners in Nepal using traditional craftsmanship techniques.

Can I wear Woolfi slippers outside?

Many Woolfi styles feature natural crepe rubber soles, designed for light indoor and outdoor wear.

Do Woolfi slippers have arch support?

Woolfi slippers are designed for natural comfort rather than rigid support structures. Additional insoles can be added if preferred.

My slippers are shedding fibres — is this normal?

Yes. A small amount of initial fibre shedding is completely normal as the wool settles.
