There are some stories that begin quietly — shaped by place, memory, and a deep connection to the land.

For Woolfi, that story begins in the Waitaki Valley of New Zealand.

Founder Fiona McIlraith was raised on a sheep and beef farm where wool was simply part of everyday life. It was dependable, warm, and ever-present — a natural material woven into both landscape and lifestyle. At the time, it wasn’t something to question. It just made sense.

Years later, returning home, that same material told a very different story.

New Zealand strong wool — once a cornerstone of the rural economy — had become deeply undervalued. In many cases, the cost of shearing outweighed the value of the fibre itself. For those connected to the land, it was a shift that felt impossible to ignore.

At the same time, a more personal need was taking shape.

After building a modern home with hard flooring throughout, Fiona found herself searching for something simple: a comfortable indoor shoe that felt considered, functional, and aligned with the space. What she found instead were options that felt bulky, synthetic, or disconnected from the way people live today.

There was a gap.

And within that gap, a question emerged:

How could a country producing so much wool not have an iconic product built around it?

A Natural Beginning

Woolfi was created to answer that question.

Not by adding more products to the market, but by creating something purposeful — a product that honours New Zealand wool while offering a natural alternative for everyday comfort.

At its core, Woolfi is about returning to what makes sense.

Natural fibres. Thoughtful design. Pieces made to be worn and lived in.

Crafted by Hand, Made to Last

Bringing that vision to life required looking beyond New Zealand.

The journey led to Nepal, where traditional wool felting techniques have been practised for generations. There, skilled artisans handcraft each pair of Woolfi slippers — shaping and moulding the wool using time-honoured methods that create both durability and softness.

Each pair is made slowly, by hand.

This partnership brings together two worlds:

  • New Zealand strong wool, grown on local farms
  • Nepalese craftsmanship, sustaining skilled artisan communities

It’s a process that values both material and maker — creating something that feels considered from beginning to end.

Designed for Modern Living

Woolfi slippers are designed to fit seamlessly into everyday life.

Soft yet supportive. Warm yet breathable. Structured yet natural.

More recently, the introduction of a rubber-soled design has extended that versatility — allowing wear both indoors and out, without compromising comfort or aesthetic. Quiet on hard flooring and easy to wear throughout the day, they are made for the rhythm of modern living.

These are not seasonal pieces.

They are made to be reached for, day after day.

A Story Worth Wearing

Being featured in the Avenues Wool Issue 2026 is a meaningful moment for Woolfi — not just as recognition, but as a reflection of a much deeper story.

One that begins on a New Zealand farm.
One that values natural materials and slow craftsmanship.
One that continues to evolve with every pair made.

Because the things we wear every day should feel good — in every sense.
